The need for international cooperation is underscored by the fact that many shark species have wide ranging distributions, frequently traverse national boundaries, and are exploited by multinational fisheries. Shark tagging is also an important means to increase our biological understanding of sharks and to obtain information for rational resource management. The tagging of sharks(and other aquatic animals) provides information on stock identity, movements and migration (including rates and routes), abundance, age and growth (including verification/validation of age determination methods), mortality, and behavior.

http://www.ocdiveboat.com/sharktagging.asp

Trip Date: 08/7/2011
Trip Cost: $110.00
Trip Departure Time: 6:45AM
Departure Location: White Marlin Marina, Ocean City, MD
We will be back at the dock after the trip around 1:30pm

Kids SCUBA Day Camp At The Beach!

Kids SCUBA Day Camp At The Beach!

Relax on the beach while your kids learn the basics of SCUBA Diving at SCUBA Day Camp!

Scuba Day Camp is a program that introduces campers to scuba diving and the underwater world. Countless ships have sunk along the Maryland coastline; many of them have never been discovered and if they have, never or rarely dove on. This is a chance to have some fun and who know what we will find! This dive will be like a drift dive, we will find some open area near a wreck a couple miles off Assateague Island and run the sand bottom looking for new things along the way. After a fun day of diving, shower up and meet us back at the dock for some burgers before the Ocean City 4th of July Firework Show!
Sign up online!

Charter News:

Rental Tanks Available This Year!
We have some Steel 90cf Tanks for rent this year, if you need a rental tank, weights or even a speargun you can rent it online when you book your charter!

New dive boat is on schedule!
Our new dive boat is on schedule! They hide in little crevices, so you peek, peer, and generally sneak around to try to find one. In this course, we'll show you the basics of how to hunt for lobsters, where to look, and give you the gear to go down and look on your own.

Why Twilight? Lobsters are nocturnal - and while you will find them out in the day, they are most active at night. For this course we'll meet at 5pm so we still have some daylight to show you how to use the equipment and give some how-tos, and your first dive may be when its still kind of dusky, just as the lobsters are starting to come out (we'll do two dives).

A twilight lobster hunt - what could be more fun than that? And who knows, you may even end up with dinner!

For more information or to check the course dates and prices click here

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 168px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/TCpw5LLpvAI/AAAAAAAAJsM/ia8fEC8W50E/s320/lobster_hunt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488323223460887554" />

Now offering Commercial Diving Services!

Now offering Commercial Diving Services!

Marine Divers Services based in Ocean City, MD specializes in dockside underwater boat and marine inspection, diagnostics and repair. Vis was 20+ on the bottom. Temp was 63 on the surface and 57 on the sand. 6 Bugs, several tog and a bushel of large mussels later we headed for a third dive at the Kona-Hi'lola (Zone 1). Temps were about the same but vis dropped to about 10-15. Got a few more tog and headed in..

For the Saturday AM trip with 6 divers + crew, we headed out for two dives on the Kathleen Riggins (Zone 2). Vis was around 15 ft, temps about the same as Friday. Seas came up a little but were still pretty pleasant. No spearfishing on this trip.

The Saturday PM trip also with 6 divers + crew was back at the Kona-Hi'lola (Zone 1) for two. Just a fun quick early evening charter with some Jersey boys. Seas were back around 2-3ft @ 9 seconds. Vis was around 10ft. We not only like to explore the local waters but we love to enjoy a fresh sea food dinner along the way.

Info can also be found at http://www.baydiveboat.com

The Malama Kai aka OC Dive Boat http://www.ocdiveboat.com will be running dive charters in the Chesapeake Bay from October - December.

Oyster diving beds in the Chesapeake Bay are usually about 10 to 15 feet deep underwater, with minimal current. These SCUBA diving conditions make for an easy fun dive for all divers. The visibility in the fall can be 8-15 ft and all season long the worst is still an arms length which is all you need to find the oysters.

In addition to Oyster Diving, we will also be diving some rarely visited shipwrecks and the notorious “bridge rubble” reef
systems, the bridge rubble reefs and concrete piles were sunk creating large sanctuaries for all sorts of marine life.

Don’t forget to take a sturdy bag with you underwater. Bring one that's specially designed to hold oysters or other mollusks.

Sign Up Online to Dive the Chesapeake Bay!

Weekly Chesapeake Bay Dive Schedule
October thru December

Friday AM – Oysters Dives - $60

Saturday AM – Oysters Dives - $60

Saturday PM – Bridge Rubble Dives - $70

Sunday AM – Wreck Dives - $80

Ocean City Spearfishing

In addition to exploring the many natural and artificial wrecks off the Maryland coast, Ocean City, MD is a great place for spearfishing and lobster hunting.

Our local wrecks provide a permanent home to many marine animals as well as becoming an in-season "stop-over" for migrating gamefish. our dive boat the Malama Kai aka www.ocdiveboat.com in Ocean City, MD

1) Intro to OC Diving Weekends - On Intro to OC Diving weekends, we will send some extra staff along and hit some of the shallower, easier dive sites. On these weekends, we don't require an Advanced certification, so as long as you have an Open Water certification you can jump on board and have some fun with us!

2) Night Dives - We have set up some night dives on a few evenings throughout the summer. Looking for something cool to do on the 4th of July? How about a night dive, and then we'll stay out on the water and enjoy the Ocean City fireworks from a unique (and uncrowded) vantage point?

3) Weekday Charters - We are available for weekday charters! They aren't on our regular schedule, but if you're going to the beach and want to get out there for some diving call us up and we'll set up a trip for you!

4) New Wreck Sites - We've added a few new cool wreck sites to the schedule, including the Washingtonian, African Queen, USS Blenny, and the Elizabeth Palmer, as well as some dates to go spearfishing on Fenwick Shoals!

June Calendar: http://www.ocdiveboat.com/iscalendar.asp?date=6-10-2009

2009 Diving Picture Library http://picasaweb.google.com/diveoc/OCDiveBoat2009

End of May Diving Special

We have a GREAT diving opportunity for you - on the last weekend of May (May 30th and 31st) we are offering Ocean City Dive charters for only $75!! The USS Blenny is a WW2 era submarine that was sunk 12 mile SE off the coast of Ocean City, MD in the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Maryland artificial reef program. We set out of the OC Commercial docks around 7:00 AM on Saturday and it was about an hour ride to the GPS coordinates I had on record. After searching around for a blurp on the sonar we found what looked to be a possible wreck about 70 feet underwater so we dropped anchor and prepped up. The seas which were around 2-3 feet on the way out had flattened to what we call “Lake Atlantic”. Great conditions for being so far offshore.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/SL6YBde-YpI/AAAAAAAAFU0/ZYmVcpGZG8o/s320/uss_blenny_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241794167167672978" />

The conditions underwater were pretty bad; above the thermocline was a hazy yellow brown with about two-three feet of visibility. Once pass the thermocline around 30 feet it was like the lights went out, pitch black with 18 inches of visibility (with a flash light). It was an eerie feeling sinking 70 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean not knowing what is around you in total darkness. The Blenny had lots of growth and life around. Interesting wreck although we only explored a small portion of it on this voyage.

We each had two dives ranging from 20- 40 min, and then we headed in. We had an afternoon forecast of rain and possible thunderstorms so we wanted to get back before “Lake Atlantic” became “Atlantic Chop”. We returned to the docks around 1:00 pm, successful trip all around!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/SL6ZYkwMLyI/AAAAAAAAFU8/GvhcYlhHKI8/s320/Diving+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241795663767547682" />

http://www.palmdivers.com/shared/Palm%20Divers%20OC%20Dive%201.jpg

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/SL6ZY8vTC8I/AAAAAAAAFVE/oGkHSDlV174/s320/Diving+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241795670206254018" />

http://www.palmdivers.com/shared/Palm%20Divers%20OC%20Dive%202.jpg

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/SL6ZY7-6x1I/AAAAAAAAFVM/f3J4tYHXcCk/s320/Diving+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241795670003337042" />

http://www.palmdivers.com/shared/Palm%20Divers%20OC%20Dive%203.jpg

Key Largo Diving | Ocean City Diving

Painting the Pilothouse

I spent the whole weekend in the hot sun painting the inside of the pilothouse, she now looks like a brand new boat! It turned out awesome, just as planned! Trevor and I towed it down to Ocean City last weekend on the new Venture 9250 Tri-Axel trailer. No swaying at all, much, much better (and safer) then the last trailer. We got it launched and in the water and over to the new slip at Pines Point Marina. The only problem we had was a bad hot wire to the ignition switch so we had to get a mechanic out to re-connect a new hot and within a couple hours we had it running like a champ. We made a quick run out to the ocean via OC inlet through 4-5 foot current swell, a bit bouncy but the hull of this boat is designed to take on the worst Atlantic off shore conditions so it took it pretty well.

Talked to Newton Boats today and the custom aluminum dive benches I ordered are in production. Hopefully I should have them in a few weeks.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Crl80uLbThQ/SICAqbTzDlI/AAAAAAAAEPo/bJRNvx98WXk/s320/DiveBoat_4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224317034123431506" />

Beach Bum to SCUBA Instructor ?

I have always been a water person, growing up with the luxury of a back yard swimming pool my brothers and I became avid swimmers. My parents had a house in Nags Head, NC where we spent most of our childhood summers. Day after day I spent getting tossed around by the unpredictable Atlantic Coastal waves and strong rip tides. I began bogie boarding and quickly learned the power of Mother Nature while enjoying every bone crushing wipe out and near drowning blow of her wrath.

When I started high school I drifted away from the attachment I had with the ocean and dove into a new world of distraction and confrontation. For the next several years I sank into a mode of what I thought was "trying to find myself". Being lost eventually I crashed into reality and woke up one day being out of school, now an "adult" and needing a new direction in my life.

During the tech boom, I began working full time with my family building websites for people. We started a company later growing into a full government contracting service company where we became fairly successful. My uncle who would come by the office from time to time would always talk about these "cave dives" he was going on. He was a part time SSI DiveCon aka Divemaster for a shop in Virgina. One day after hearing about how much fun he was having, I decided that I wanted to check out this whole SCUBA diving thing. I signed up for an open water class and before I knew it I was certified and hanging out at this cold rock quarry every other weekend. I quickly went on to do advanced open water then rescue diver and began working with the other instructors as a SSI DiveCon.

Later moving to Gaithersburg, MD I began traveling all over the world SCUBA diving and surfing in tropical places like Costa Rica and Hawaii. In 2007 I decided that I wanted to make SCUBA diving a major part of my future plans and drove down to Key Largo, FL. I spent the next 4 weeks living down there going through the PADI IDC. After passing my IE (Instructors Examination) I came back to Maryland and got a job working two weekends a month teaching PADI Open Water SCUBA classes for Atlantic Edge Dive Center in Gaithersburg, MD. The Atlantic Edge staff, especially the owners Trevor & John have become a big part of my life. I enjoy spending time at the shop advancing my knowledge while shooting the breeze.

So.. if you are tired of hearing other people talk about the fun they are having SCUBA diving, maybe it's time you signed up with us to get certified!

Here is me with the PADI Examiner holding my certificate right after completing my PADI Instructors Examination.
